Willett Family Reserve Straight Rye tasting notes.

Willett Distillery | Straight Rye Whiskey | Bardstown, KY | $55.00* | 106.6 proof | 4 years | Mashbill is unknown

The whiskey.

Willett is a brand that draws a mystique among whiskey drinkers. The distillery was founded in 1936, but the 70s and 80s caused the distillery to shut down. They were able to survive on the back stock of whiskey but eventually started sourcing. In 2012 they reopened their doors. The Family Reserve Series Willett Rye has an unknown mashbill, but we know it is at least 51% rye aged in new charred oak barrels.

The taste.

The mystique is unraveled with hints of vanilla and cinnamon. Touches of oak fade in and out. Vanilla and dark chocolate come out in the taste before a short spice finish.

The takeaway.

The family reserve series can be challenging to find in Texas, but if you come across a bottle at a reasonable price, pick it up. The whiskey is approachable with good flavor. Is it worth the hype? That is for you to decide.
