Auchentoshan American Oak | Tasting notes.

Auchentoshan Distillery | American Oak | Scotland | $35.00* | 80 proof | No Age Statemen | 100% malted barley

The whiskey.

American Oak is an entry-level whiskey from the Auchentoshan Distillery in Scotland. This whiskey is a single malt scotch with no age statement—the whiskey ages in first and second fill bourbon barrels. First fill references it is the first time a whiskey, besides the original bourbon, is aging in the barrel. The second fill is the second time whiskey is aging in the used bourbon barrel. It is a single malt, so it is a 100% malted barley from a single distillery and aged at least three years. Auchentoshan is in the lowlands of Scotland and focuses on triple distillation. Something unique to Scotland. This region has more industrial whiskey production, grain whiskey for blends.

The taste.

Do not let the straw-like color fool you; this 80 proof stirs vanilla and dark fruits in the first whiffs. The oak comes through on the palate with some green grass and citrus. It is heavier than would expect on the tongue with an oily texture that coats your mouth. The finish is medium with barrel spice and a touch of licorice.

The takeaway.

It is an entry-level whiskey, but not my favorite from Auchentoshan. The price tag makes it affordable for someone looking to try a new scotch, but it is not one that will overwhelm you. It is a quality whiskey that can introduce you to Auchentoshan and other excellent whiskeys they make.
